The 'One-Third Rule'

If you choose to cut your lawn less than the recommended 3 inches, it's even more critical that you follow the “One-Third Rule." Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade when mowing.

That means if you are going to keep your grass just 1.5 inches tall, you’ll have to mow after the lawn has grown only 3/4 of an inch, to just over 2 inches tall. A lawn cut to 3 inches tall would have to grow twice as much (1.5 inches) before it would need mowing.
